The incidence of renal diseases in the world population has grown at such and extent that we can talk of a pandemia. Most renal diseases evolve towards cronic and terminal renal failure. Etiology is different, both known and unknown. No drugs are available to prevent the evolution towards renal failure, a condition requiring dialysis and transplantation. Stem cells are a reasonable hope but the research has just begun.
A research network in this field, KidStem, has been active for the last years connecting all European Centres working in the field. KidStem annual meetings have offered a valuable contribution to establish reasearch programmes and foster exchanges among scientists. We therefore invite our colleagues to join us in Genoa for a further meeting.
